Summerize Your Backyard

Now that the weather is warmer and the days are longer, you are most likely thinking about spending your evenings and weekends entertaining with friends and family in your backyard. When your yard is a warm and welcoming environment, you and your loved ones will enjoy getting to share laughs and create memories outside.

Of course, after going through the fall and winter months, there might be a few areas of your yard that need some TLC to get it in tip-top shape. So, here are a few ways to tidy up and decorate to get your backyard ready for summer.

Backyard Tips for the Summer

Since summertime is all about spending more time outdoors, we put together a few helpful tips to summerize your backyard:

  • Clean up your outdoor spaces: Before welcoming others, do a quick walk through your yard to see what might need some “spring cleaning.” Mold can take over during gray and rainy months, so your house, driveway, patio, and sidewalks might need a quick pressure wash. You can also clean out your gutters that may have gotten clogged with fallen leaves and debris, wash your windows and apply a fresh stain to your deck.
  • Do a bit of landscaping and gardening: Simple landscaping can do wonders for your home. Keep up your yard’s appearance with regular mowing and weeding. Then, take a few minutes to trim and prune any overgrown shrubs. Adding some fresh pine straw or mulch can really add the finishing touch.
Incorporate some pops of color: You can add some seasonal blooms and pops of color with annuals. Instead of overwhelming your backyard with flowers, you can focus on adding them in hanging baskets or planters for your porch.
  • Prevent pests: No one wants to be constantly swatting away mosquitoes when hanging out in your backyard, so make sure to remove any standing water from the area. You can also plant a few mosquito-repellent herbs like lemon balm or rosemary to keep them away. Some citronella candles or Tiki torches will do the job as well, and with the added benefit of providing light.
  • Bring the indoors outside: Guests will feel welcomed with “indoor” touches like cozy cushions and decorative pillows on your outdoor furniture. Side tables give guests a spot to place their drinks, and outdoor rugs add a comfortable and eye-catching touch. You can also create a warm ambiance with lanterns or bistro lights.
  • Don’t forget about your grill: It’s not summer without at least one cookout. Make sure to wipe down your grill and clean all the shelves, racks and counters, then take a quick inventory of your supplies – do you have enough charcoal and propane? How about grill station gear like tools? Don’t forget about seasonings, sauces, and condiments!
